Behind the Name:

The term Apocrypha, originally Greek in nature, means secret biblical or related writings not forming part of the accepted canon of Scripture.

BIPOCRYPHA, which stands for Black, Intuitive, People of Creativity, is a tribute to the canon of African American literature and art, as well as a word play, inspired by Christian poets Jupiter Hammon and Phyllis Wheatley, the Adam and Eve of African American literature.

Vision Statement:

BIPOCRYPHA Magazine is a collection of Black literary and visual art that is preserved, protected, and elevated. The typical canon is a selection of Western high-culture literature, music, philosophy, and works of art that are considered as classics, and it reflects the biases of those in power. BIPOCRYPHA Magazine challenges the Western Canon, contributes to the Black Canon, and furthers the Biblical Canon by creating new perspectives and aesthetics that are based on the experiences of African American religious traditions.
